Le phénomène Anne Geddes

Un bébé habillé en petit lapin, un tout-petit déguisé en tournesol, des nourrissons endormis sur un tapis de plumes. Grâce à sa façon unique de portraiturer les nouveaux-nés, Anne Geddes est devenue l'une des photographes les plus largement connues et aimées au monde. Son oeuvre est devenue une marque en soi, déclinée en posters, puzzles, applications, calendriers et vêtements, tous inspirés par ses photographies de bébé.

Comme aucun autre artiste avant elle, Geddes s'efforce de saisir la beauté, la pureté et la vulnérabilité des jeunes enfants, et de traduire en image sa profonde conviction selon laquelle chaque enfant sans exception doit être « protégé, élevé et aimé ». Depuis ses débuts en 1992, son programme caricatif, la « Geddes Philanthropic Trust », a attribué des fonds importants récoltés grâce aux produits Anne Geddes pour aider à la lutte contre la maltraitance et la négligence des enfants à travers la planète.

Cette rétrospective consacrée à Geddes donne accès à l'intégralité de ses archives, remontant jusqu'aux années 1980. Comprenant de nombreuses images jamais montrées jusqu'alors, l'ouvrage rend hommage à une esthétique attachante et pleine de fantaisie autant qu'à l'esprit qui la sous-tend: prendre soin des plus jeunes et des plus vulnérables, et finalement de l'avenir de l'humanité.

Reuel Golden, diplômé de sciences politiques de l'université du Sussex, en Angleterre, est ancien rédacteur en chef du British Journal of Photography. Pour TASCHEN, il a collaboré à l'édition de différents titres, dont The Rolling Stones, Her Majesty, Harry Benson. The Beatles, The Beautiful Game. Le football des années 1970 et New York et London, deux livres de la collection Portrait d'une ville.
